It’s not new news that Mongolia has extremely harsh cold weather, especially in winter. Winter in Mongolia starts in November and continues for almost 5 months with nearly -30C degrees cold weather and a lot of snow. But that also means that Mongolia has beautiful winter and exciting festivals are coming near. 

 So here we are to help you to plan your travel in Mongolian winter.

Winter Horse Festival - Taliin tumen aduu

The Winter horse Festival – Taliin Tumen Aduu is unique in its way compared to the other horse festivals around the world with thousands of horses galloping through the Mongolian steppe. Riders will be dressed in the Mongolian traditional way and horses will be elegantly equipped with beautiful handmade saddles and more.   

You can watch horse racing, or ride a horse on your own, participate in competitions related to the Mongolian nomadic horsemen culture, so you can experience everything about Mongolian horsemanship.

Lunar new year

Mongolian Tsagaan Sar, the lunar new year is one of the main celebrations of Mongolians next to the famous Naadam Festival. 

The lunar new year is a celebration of the ending of the winter and the beginning of the spring according to the Lunar calendar. Mongolians celebrate the Lunar new year absolute traditional, family-oriented way. Lunar new year celebration continues for 3 consecutive days of early February and its official public holidays of Mongolia. The Tsagaan Sar allows uniting families and people, strengthens the family bond, and enables people to get to know their family tree. Mostly young people will go visit the elders of their family and one of the nicest parts is everyone will receive small gifts.

Ice festival

Every March, the Khuvsgul Lake area celebrates the Ice Festival. The Festival continues for 2 days on the crystal clear frozen lake with horse sleighs, ice sculptures, traditional food, and vibrant competitions including ice skating, ice sumo wrestling, tug of war, ice ger building, and dog sledding.
