What is the Naadam festival in Mongolia?

From July 10th to July 15th, during the most pleasant days of summer, it is Mongolian biggest festival, Naadam day. The Festival continues for 5 days straight and the whole country is on vacation during Naadam days, enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Main celebrations continue for three days from the 10th to the 12th of July, and the remaining days are mostly used as a vacation.

10th of July: on the Central square of Ulaanbaatar “Traditional clothes day” will start as a parade of citizens with colorful, traditional dress Deel. Mongolians ethnics have different traditional clothes for each of them and there is a high chance that you can learn about Mongolian culture and more. 

11th of July: When the Nine White Banners are ceremonially transferred by horse soldiers from the Government House to Naadam Stadium, the grand opening ceremony will start. They will be a president speech, traditional and modern art concert, and more. For the second half of the day the famous man-three games: wrestling, archery, and horse race will start. The archery, game, and wrestling take place in the main arena in Ulaanbaatar, while the horse racing takes place on an open field 30km west of Ulaanbaatar. You can enjoy walking around the central stadium and trying festival foods too. People will be wearing traditional clothes and there will be a chance to try them on. 

12th of July: Winners of the man-three games will be awarded by the President of Mongolia, and in the evening Gala Concert will take place on the Sukhbaatar, Central square of Ulaanbaatar. 

Naadam festival is celebrated throughout the whole county, 21 provinces, and 333 soums, so even if you couldn’t attend the festival in Ulaanbaatar, there is a still chance to enjoy it during the whole of July.
