Mongolia is known as a land of “Eternal Blue Sky”. In Mongolia, there are 250 and more sunny days a year, with clear cloudless skies.
Along with Southern Siberia, Mongolia has an extreme and challenging climate, with long, cold, dry winters and short, cool yet warm, and wet summers. The average temperature in summer is +21°C, and for the winter it’s –20°C.
Spring starts from Mid-March and continues until June. Mongolian spring is famous for its unpredictable nature. You can expect a sunny morning, a clear afternoon, and snowstorms in the evening. Spring days are mostly windy with –0°C to 15°C. First rain usually falls around April but the last snow can be shown around late May or beginning of June. If you decide to travel to Mongolia in springtime make sure to bring warm clothes.
Mongolian summer is short and only continues around 2 or 3 months. Tourism usually starts around mid-June. June weather is good and usually dry throughout the central and southern regions since Mongolian spring is most likely to not have rain. Some places like Eagle valley can still be snowy until late June. But when July arrives everything will change. The Naadam festival season starts and the weather becomes much warmer, or even hot around 30°C to 40°C in the Gobi region. This warm and nice weather will continue till late August.
Autumn is the best time to travel around Mongolian Gobi with its warm weather. Colors will change drastically, and make natural colorful paintings all around Mongolia. The first snow usually falls around late September or early October. Do not forget to bring warm clothes, even winter coats. Also, there will be two different eagle festivals in western Mongolia during September and October which makes the autumn high season for tourists.
Winter in Mongolia is harsh and cold. With a lot of snow, and storms the temperature can go down to -40°C. Winter usually starts from the beginning of November and can extend to mid-March. Despite cold weather, there are plenty of things that you can do during winter such as ice festivals, New year, and Lunar New year celebrations can be amazing and warm experiences during your stay.
